The Twelve Days of… Association Management

By: Caroline Thomas

I’m not sure where the time went, but somehow it’s already time to deck the halls! Regardless of how you celebrate this time of year, you may be faced with some much needed preparation in the workplace for the end of the year. We’re sharing a new holiday carol for businesses.

“On the First day of Christmas my true love sent to me”…. Do you know the song? It’s an old English Christmas carol that goes through gifts given on each of the twelve days of Christmas, one verse building on the next. So, you ask… what does that have to do with your business? More than you may realize!

Follow these twelve tips to ensure a painless holiday season at the office:

  1. Plan Accordingly. Notify members and clients of office closures as soon as possible, preferably 4-6 weeks in advance. It allows both sides to plan accordingly.
  2. Early Payables. It’s a busy time of year with the mail. Buffer some extra time on this one!
  3. Tweeters Tweeting. In addition to announcing office closure dates via Twitter, you can use social media management sites like Hootsuite to pre-schedule posts.
  4. Festive Functions. Make time to spend with family and friends and attend your company holiday party.
  5. Pay-it-Forwards. This is the season of giving, after all! Compliment someone on a job well done or pay for the person behind you in line at the coffee shop. Little or small, it can affect us all.
  6. Holiday Cards. This is a great time to write a note to your clients. Thank them for their involvement and wish them a Happy New Year.
  7. Facebook Reminders. Paid advertising is worth big bucks this time of year with high internet traffic. Boost your Facebook posts!
  8. Walks around the Block. Let’s face it; we eat a lot this time or year. Use your lunch break to get out of the office and take a walk around the complex. Use your fitness tracker if you have one (and complete with coworkers on steps).
  9. Files Filed. Set aside just 10-15 minutes every day to organize your desk and file paperwork in the proper place. Before long everything will be in its place.
  10. Sanitary Spaces. We have to contend with nasty germs during flu season. It’s important to use hand sanitizer regularly and wipe down your desk.
  11. Bakers Baking. I don’t know about you, but our office morale is up when treats are involved. Pick a little something up at the store and bring it into work.
  12. Sunny Attitudes. It’s a stressful time of year. Take on each day with a positive attitude and it will rub off on your colleagues.

Whatever plans you have this holiday season, how will you approach and tackle it? From one Association Management professional to another, happy holidays!
