I remember reading this great blog by my colleague Will Ferguson about being a volunteer leader.  In it, he provides some great tips for those looking to become involved in an association, such as selecting a volunteer position, being present, following through and knowing when to step back.

Spreading Holiday Cheer

Holidays are a great time to show others that you care.  Whether you manage an organization of 40 members or 4,000 members, it is important to remember them during the holiday season.  We live in a world where people communicate in characters through text and emails, which are instantaneous.  Weekly, if not daily, your members are receiving emails from the association, asking them for assistance, sponsorships, etc.  To receive a note in your mailbox that doesn’t ask for anything, but instead thanks them for their hard work throughout the year and wishing them and their families a happy holiday, is a refreshing surprise.  Continue reading Spreading Holiday Cheer

The Holidays are Upon Us

It’s that time of year again!  The holidays are here and as much as we love the food, festivities, and spending time with the ones we love, let’s just be honest for a second and say, the holidays are stressful.  As if you weren’t busy enough going about your normal day to day tasks, let’s go ahead and add sending out holiday cards, buying presents, traveling, and going to 8 different holiday parties  to your running to do list that is already a mile long.  On top of all of that, just consider the amount of work that is piling up while you’re out of town eating your fill of turkey and apple pie.  How in the world are you supposed to enjoy this amazing time of the year that you spend with family and friends?  Here are some tips you can use this holiday season to try and find that balance between your work life and your personal life.  Continue reading The Holidays are Upon Us
