I remember reading this great blog by my colleague Will Ferguson about being a volunteer leader. In it, he provides some great tips for those looking to become involved in an association, such as selecting a volunteer position, being present, following through and knowing when to step back.
Volunteering with an organization is a great way to meet new people, find a mentor, give back to your community, and even further your career. As association professionals, we spend so much of our time focused on helping our volunteer leaders that we forget there is another side to the volunteer coin: serving.
I think that, for most of us, the reason we are in non-profit management is because we want to help. We want to solve problems. We want to help create solutions. In short, we want to change the world – even if it’s just through helping change the regulations for widget makers.
If you’re in a position where you’re not quite feeling enough challenge, or if you want to branch out and gain some leadership experience, why not consider joining a committee? Let me start off by saying that I am not a humbug. I in fact anxiously await the moment when that lazy December Saturday finally arrives, I pull out the ever-increasing bins of Christmas décor, I put on the Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas CD (a childhood tradition carried over, much to my husband’s dismay) and make my house Christmas worthy. By the time I’m done, my children may as well be wrapped in red and green. Yet by the time December 25 concludes, my OCD tendencies have started to prickle me, along with the fallen pine needles now embedded into my carpet. Four days out and I’m fighting a losing battle, everything Christmas must go and my life must get back to normal again. I’ve worked with exhibitors for over a decade and there’s no doubt that they are the lifeblood of most associations. Without the support of the associate/industry members through exhibits and sponsorships, most associations could not continue having Annual Conventions each year.
So why is it that some meeting planners seem to focus little energy enhancing the experiences of the exhibitors? Most likely, this lack of energy is probably not deliberate. Hosting and managing an Annual Convention is a LOT of work and depending on the amount of staff, you may not have time to focus on everything.
